Our experience

Dunrobin Castle, Sutherland

There are some castles that are impressive because of their history, and then there are castles that make an impression the moment you see them. Dunrobin Castle is definitely one of those places.

With its fairytale-style towers and turrets overlooking the Moray Firth, Dunrobin is one of the most recognisable castles in the Highlands. The setting alone makes it feel like something from another world, with the castle sitting above its formal gardens and the coastline stretching out beyond.

Exploring the Castle

Walking around the castle gives you the chance to see inside the historic rooms and get a feel for what life would have been like here over the centuries. The building has a fascinating history dating back to the 13th century and has been home to the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland for generations.

The Formal Gardens

Outside, the formal gardens are just as impressive as the castle itself. They were designed in the 19th century with the gardens at Versailles as inspiration, and the layout creates some beautiful views back towards the castle.

Walking down through the gardens gives you a completely different perspective of the building, with the castle towering above you.

Falconry Display

One of the highlights of a visit is the falconry display, where birds of prey are flown on the castle lawn. Seeing the birds flying with the castle as a backdrop makes this feel like much more than a standard castle visit.

The Museum

There is also a museum within the grounds, with collections including Pictish stones, archaeological items and historical objects, adding another interesting part to the visit.

How Long Do You Need?

I liked that Dunrobin isn't somewhere you simply walk around the castle and leave. There is plenty to explore between the castle itself, the gardens, museum and falconry display, so it feels like somewhere you can spend a good few hours rather than just making a quick stop.

What Makes Dunrobin Special?

The whole setting is what makes Dunrobin particularly special. The combination of the castle's architecture, the gardens, the surrounding Highland landscape and the views towards the Moray Firth makes it one of those places that really stays with you after you've left.

Would I Visit Again?

Absolutely.
