Our experience

During my trip to Pitlochry, I decided to tackle a circular hike up Craigower Hill, following forest tracks to the viewpoint before returning along a much steeper woodland trail.

The Climb Through the Forest

I began by following the forest road uphill, enjoying the gradual climb through the trees. It was a lovely way to start the hike, with the track winding its way further into the woodland as I gained height.

Eventually, I turned off the wider forest road and followed a narrower trail through the trees towards Craigower's summit. This part of the walk felt more like a proper woodland hike, with the path leading through the forest towards the viewpoint.

There was something enjoyable about the contrast between the wider forest tracks and the smaller trails. It made the climb feel varied, with the promise of some spectacular scenery waiting at the top.

Beautiful Views from Craigower Hill

Reaching the viewpoint made the climb worthwhile. After walking through the forest, the scenery opened up to reveal fantastic views across the surrounding Perthshire countryside.

Craigower is known for its panoramas towards Loch Tummel and the distinctive mountain Schiehallion, as well as views across Pitlochry and the surrounding hills. It's an impressive reward for a relatively short hill hike.

I spent a while at the viewpoint, taking a break and enjoying the scenery rather than rushing straight back down. It was lovely having time to appreciate the landscape from above, especially after making my way uphill through the forest.

A Steeper Route Back Through the Forest

Rather than returning the same way, I continued along the circular route, descending through the forest on a much steeper trail.

This section felt noticeably different from the climb. The downhill path required more care, particularly on the steeper sections, but it made for an enjoyable change of scenery as I headed back through the woodland.

The entire outing took me around two and a half hours, including the time I spent relaxing at the viewpoint. It was a rewarding little hike, combining forest roads, woodland paths and some incredible views.
